( Chapter 1: The Nightmare )
( Chapter 2: It Didn't Like What It Seemed )
---------------
Shige stood still right in front of Ryo’s desk. He didn’t believe what he just heard. His eyes were then set on a piece of document that Ryo just threw to his approved articles box. Shige was still in such big shock that he didn’t move from where he was standing. He just observed his boss continuing whatever he was typing on his desktop.
“Seriously, Kato. Stop standing there like an idiot. You can go already,” said Ryo at the end.
“B-but.. m-my draft??”
“What’s wrong with your draft?” asked Ryo.
“It’s only my third draft, Nishikido-san. You never approved my article before its eleventh draft, let alone its third draft,” said Shige in confused.
Ryo stopped typing. He looked up and frowned at his sub-ordinate. “I don’t understand you, Kato. You looked very much pissed each time I reject your draft. And now you complained because I approved your article on its third draft. Do you have any personal grudge against me or something?” asked Ryo as he felt a little irritated.
The younger man shook his head and quickly turned to his desk. He must be hallucinating right now, he thought. It was just a dream and it wasn’t real, he thought again. He pinched his cheek hard, but he was sure that it hurt. Even so, it seemed too good to be true! Shige took a glance at Ryo. His boss was still typing something on his desktop. It was 7pm, about two hours after their working hour finished, and it was just Ryo and he left on the office.
“You can leave, Kato. Don’t worry. I’ll count in your two hours over time,” said Ryo without breaking his concentration from his desktop.
“You’re going back anytime soon?” asked Shige instead.
“Right after I finish this email,” replied Ryo.
“Then I’ll wait for you,” said Shige as he started packing his belongings.
Ryo stopped typing for the second time that evening. He looked at Shige, not frowning like he did before but quite intensely. “What about a cup of coffee after this? Since I approved your article on its third draft, maybe we can celebrate this rare incident,” said Ryo quite unexpectedly.
--------
Masuda could feel his hand quite trembling. The pen on his right hand didn’t really move at all. He just took a quick peek at the person sitting in front of Shige. It wasn’t Koyama this time. Masuda could still remember the day Ryo came to that small town. He was one hell of a person.
“Black coffee and chicken salad,” said Ryo as he closed the menu he was holding. Masuda quickly wrote his order down.
“I’ll have the usual, Massu,” Shige smiled as he handed back the menu to Masuda.
“Eh? Coffee and edamen? But you had the same exact order for lunch, Shige. You need to have a proper meal,” said Masuda.
“Coffee and edamen?”
“Yes, Sir. He always orders them for lunch,” explained Masuda.
“What the hell, Kato?! Do you realize how skinny you are? I even think that I weight more than you. Give him grilled bacon or something as fatty as that, boy,” told Ryo to Masuda.
Masuda quickly went back to the kitchen and passed the order to the café’s kitchen. He then walked back behind the bar. There, Tegoshi was sitting on one of the chairs around the bar, with a latte right in front of him. “Who’s that? I never see him before,” whispered Tegoshi.
“Shige’s boss. He looks quite scary, ne?” replied Masuda. Tegoshi just nodded.
“Wait a minute. What are you doing here, Tegoshi? And when did you order a latte?” Masuda was put into shock when he realized that he didn’t notice the younger boy before.
“Oh, me? I came when you were taking their order. Sho-chan gave me the latte, for free again. Yay! And of course I came to see you, Massu-chan” cheered Tegoshi.
“Stop calling me Massu-chan! You can see me on campus, and you are my neighbour. We see each other a lot!” complained Masuda.
On the other side of the café, Ryo and Shige were just sitting there without saying anything to each other. It was quite a weird atmosphere flied around. The boss and his columnist never actually had any casual conversation before. “Damn it, Kato. Say something. This is so weird,” complained Ryo at last.
“Eh? About what?”
“Anything. I was being so kind asking you for a coffee, which ended up being a dinner, so you better entertain me,” said Ryo arrogantly.
“Ha? But Nishikido-san…”
“What about your parents?” asked Ryo.
“My parents?”
“Yeah, your parents. You see, different people has different family problem. Ehm, let’s start with my dad. Of course you know my dad. About my mom, well I never know my mom. My dad always refuses to tell me each time I ask him. I’m not even sure if I’m his real son. So, I’m just wondering whether your family story just as pathetic as mine,” said Ryo.
Shige went silent for awhile. He remained in silent even until their order came. Ryo just looked at him, feeling a little stupid asking his sub-ordinate his personal problem. “It’s okay if you do not want to tell me anything about it. I was just being random. Just eat your freaking grilled bacon,” Ryo started digging his salad.
“Oh, it’s not a big deal, really. I’m an orphan,” replied Shige as he smiled.
The older man froze for awhile after hearing what Shige was saying. He didn’t expect Shige’s background to be worse than him. As arrogance as he was, Ryo wasn’t all about being self-centered. It kind of made him felt a little guilty for asking such question, without being aware that it might hurt the other party.
“So why you got transferred to this local newspaper?” asked Shige.
“I had a fight with my dad, a big one,”
“You got transferred just because of a fight?”
“It’s a big one really,”
“Oh, I see,” Shige was kind of curious but didn’t dare to ask any further.
“I kind of refused to get married with one of his best business partners’ daughter,” Ryo explained without Shige actually asking him to.
“Get married?” Shige got a little bit curious.
“Yeah. I’m not interested in getting married, you see,” replied Ryo bluntly.
As he put a piece of his grilled bacon to his mouth, Shige just looked at the other man across the table. Shige felt a little uncomfortable because the conversation was getting a little bit too personal. “What about you? Ever think of getting married?” asked Ryo suddenly.
“Eh? Me? Oh, well. I do, of course. Get a nice girl and have kids. Typical dream it is, but well I would like to know how it feels to have a family, I must say,” replied Shige.
Ryo then smiled. For the first time for the past few months, Shige saw Ryo smiling. It wasn’t a really pretty smile. Far from being as bright as Masuda’s smile, but it was decent enough. “Everyone surely has their own dream, ne? Interesting dream you have there, Kato,” said Ryo.
“Thank you,” Shige just smiled awkwardly.
--------
Koyama was reading through an article that he just finished writing. He was on the couch right in front of the TV. His tie was placed on the coffee table, and he looked awfully in such a mess. The red pen on his right hand was busy correcting any mistakes that he did on his draft.
“Don’t work yourself up too much, Kei. Here! Have a drink,” Yamashita shoved a can of beer to Koyama as he sat next to Koyama.
“Thanks. I need to finish this by tomorrow afternoon, Yamashita-san. I don’t want to miss the dateline,” replied Koyama.
“Mou~, Kei-channn.. There’s no one else around. Stop being all polite like that. I can extend the dateline if you want me to, you know,” complained Yamashita as he put his head on Koyama’s laps, making himself comfortable in that big sofa.
“Pi, I told you that work is work. I won’t ask you to extend the dateline just because you are my… Oh, God! I kept making the same mistake here,” groaned Koyama when he spotted a mistake on his article.
“Just because I’m your what?” asked Yamashita. He quickly took away the article from Koyama’s and threw it to the coffee table.
“Yamapi! Stop acting so spoilt,” groaned Koyama again.
“Because I’m your what???” the younger man kept insisted.
“Goodness gracious, Pi. Fine! Because you are my boyfriend. Happy?”
Yamashita grinned as he pulled Koyama’s head closer to his. He pressed their lips against each other gently. Koyama could only smile at his boyfriend’s childish behaviour in their kiss. Yamashita sat up without breaking up the contact on their lips and pinned the older man on the sofa.
He locked Koyama in between his knees as he shoved his tongue inside Koyama’s half opened mouth. Yamashita could feel Koyama moaning from the back of his throat. “Pi, stop it. I need to finish the article,” said Koyama in between their kisses the moment Yamapi started to unbuttoned his shirt.
“Oh, come on. We haven’t done it in such a long time, Kei.”
Yamashita then trailed his hand to Koyama’s neck, with the other hand unbuttoning his own shirt. Koyama sighed, with lips still against Yamashita’s. It was hard for him to say no to his boyfriend. He tried to be prepared to wake up early and finish the rest of the article. Luckily for Koyama, Yamashita’s phone suddenly rang.
“Phone call, Pi”
“Just let it be,”
“No, answer it. It maybe important,” Koyama pushed his lover away. Yamashita just groaned and tried to reach his phone from where he was. Ryo’s name appeared on the small screen. Since it was Ryo, Yamashita couldn’t help it but answer the phone.
“Yes, Ryo-chan?” grumped Yamashita.
“My dad is in my house, right now!!! Get your ass here now!! I don’t think I can handle him!! No! I mean I don’t think I can handle myself!! You need to stop me from punching him in the face, Pi!!”
“Ha??? But… I can’t just go to your place right now. I’m a little busy…”
Yamashita couldn’t argue any further when Koyama pushed him off. Koyama fixed Yamashita’s messy shirt and gave him a quick peck on the cheek. “Just go ahead, Pi. I have an article to finished, anyway,” said Koyama, smirking.
“Damn it, Ryo! Fine! I’m on my way,” Yamashita hung up and made his way out of Koyama’s apartment.
