Chapter 6: Acceptance

I press the door bell for the second time now. No one seems to be bothered to open the front door. Sigh. It’s so obvious that he’s at home. I can hear clearly the sound of his guitar being played from his room that is just on the upper floor, with the veranda facing the front of the house.

Not long after I ring the bell for the third time, the guitar sound is stopped and I can hear clearly steps walking to the front door. As the person from inside turns the door knob and open the door, a guy with dark brown messy permed hair looks at me in confuse.

“What are you doing here on this wonderful Sunday morning?” asks Yamapi as he let me inside.

“Nothing. I just have nothing to do,” I say as I take off my shoes and take one of the house slippers from the shoes rack.

As I step inside Yamapi’s room, I twitch my lip and pierce my eyes sharply on Shoon that is currently sitting on Yamapi’s bed, playing with his bass. “Oh hi, Nishikido-senpai,” said Shoon with a smile.

“What the hell is Shoon doing in your room?” I whine when Yamapi finally catches up with me.

“His my cousin, he can come over anytime he wants to. Wanna join us jamming? You can use the tamborine,” says Yamapi, half laughing.

I decide to sit on the arm chair just beside the veranda. Among all people, why Shoon has to be here? Just when I need some peace! The two of them continue playing their instruments. I take a good look at Shoon’s bass. There is a sticker pasted there, a custom sticker. It’s the same exact sticker that Massu and I took last time.

“So, do you like the sticker?” I ask at the end. Shoon and Yamapi look up. Shoon points his index finger to himself, asking whether I’m talking to him.

“Yeah, I’m asking you. And I’m talking about the sticker on your bass if you are wondering,” I reply.

Shoon nods with a smile. He turns his bass so he can see clearly the sticker. He stares at it for about a whole minute and looks at me right after. “I love it. It’s really nicely made. How much I wish I know who gave me this,” he says. I chock. He doesn’t know who gave it to him? He gotta be kidding me!

“What do you mean that you wish you know who gave it to you?” I say curiously.

“Because I don’t know who gave it to me,” he replies as he wonders why I’m being all worked out.

“Oh come on! Massu called me early in the morning just to ask me to go with him for the god damn sticker,”

Shoon pauses for a second. He and Yamapi exchange looks, and then both look at me, looking more curious than myself. I raised my eyebrows, asking them why they are looking at me with such an expression. Yamapi puts his guitar aside and sits on the edge of the bed, facing me.

“Massu?” he asks.

“Yeah. He dragged me to go to Tegoshi’s shop to get the sticker. Well, the sticker is not so much pain in the ass. But seriously. A florist? Why the hell I should go with him to a florist as well. Such a humiliation, honestly,” I add.

Yamapi pulls his hand and covers his mouth in shock. Shoon stares into spaces as I finish my sentence. “I totally have no idea about that,” murmurs Shoon, still staring into spaces. Yamapi turns to Shoon. He pats Shoon’s back lightly to calm him down. “I need to see him, Ni-chan. I need to talk him. This is insane. I mean… Oh my God!” he says as he rests his palm against his forehead.

“Did I just say something wrong?” I say. Shoon shakes his head as he gets up and puts his bass back to the case. He grabs his bag from the floor. He stops right before stepping out of the room. “Thank you so much for telling me this,” he says.

I turn my head to Yamapi, totally confused. Why the hell is Shoon thanking me for? And what was that all about? Is Shoon really that mad with Massu that even if I mention his name, he will be so upset? Yamapi just smiles as pulls up his legs to the bed and crosses them.

“The sticker was already in locker on his birthday, along with a flower. But no card or anything that could indicate who gave them to him. And I think after hearing what you just said, Shoon finally accepts the fact that he’s in love with Massu. It’s been ages since Koyama and I noticed it. But well, I know it must be really hard to admit that you are attracted to a guy when you are straight,” he says.

“Yeah. I know,”

“Especially, come to think of it, it’s impossible for Shoon to not liking Massu although he’s been sleeping with Massu,” adds Yamapi.

“Yeah. Totally understandable,” I reply.

Then a pause. Yamapi pierces his eyes on me. He crawls towards me and sits on the edge of the bed, facing me, again. “Why are you acting as if you are not bothered about it? You usually pout your mouth each time I bring up anything related to Massu’s and Shoon’s relationship.”

“Trust me, Pi. I know exactly how it feels when your body is not listening to your sane mind. No matter how hard your mind is telling you to stop, you just won’t.” I say bluntly.

“Eh?”

Crap! I shouldn’t have said that! Shit, Ryo! You are so doomed! You are supposed to come over just to hang out! You aren’t supposed to say anything about what happened yesterday!

“Ryo-chan, do you have anything to tell me? Come to thing of it, it’s totally weird for you to come all the way, passing about three train stations, just because you have nothing to do. It makes more sense if you hit Koyama’s shop which is way nearer to your place.”

I just go silent. I can’t tell him that I do not want to go to Koyama’s shop because Shige is helping him out the whole day today. I glance at Yamapi as I pout my mouth. Should I tell him? Maybe he can help me out. But, if I tell him I’ll be saying something that really opposites of what I’ve been believe in, right? All this time I’ve been so against Massu’s and Shoon’s relationship.

“Ryo?”

I take a long deep breath. I put both palms on my cheeks, aren’t really sure whether I really should tell him. Yamapi is still sitting on the edge of the bed, waiting for my answer. Gosh. This sucks to the max. “Shige kissed me last night.”

Yamapi blinks.

“I said Shige kissed me last night. And what’s worse is that I kissed him back,”

Yamapi blinks, again.

“Can you please stop blinking and say something instead?”

Yamapi covers his mouth with his hand, totally in shock. His eyes are wide open, which I’m not really sure whether it’s from his excitement or the shock. “Shige as in Kato Shigeaki? Koyama’s friend? The one that you said you didn’t see the name on the student’s list during the first registration day?”

“Yes, the same exact one,” I reply.

“Oh my God! And you said you kissed him back? Were you sick, Ryo?” says Yamapi, in more shock.

“No! I was perfectly healthy. My mind told me to push him, but I kissed him back instead! I mean, I was like.. well.. I mean.. blah! I don’t know! Even I, myself, was shock when I kissed him back,”

“God! We need to see Koyama! I’m having a de javu right now! I think what happened to Shoon is happening all over again! Oh my God! This is the same exact incident! It’s totally just like when Massu kissed him for the first time! Oh my God! I need to see a doctor! I’m hallucinating!” says Yamapi as he pulls my wrist and drags me out of the room.

“No! We can’t go to Koyama’s place!”

“Eh? Why not? If it’s not because of Koyama, I’ll be in mental hospital after Shoon told me that Massu kissed him. And I think it’s the right time to go to consult to him again,” says Yamapi as he pierces his eyes to me.

“We can’t! Shige is there! He’s helping Koyama right now! That’s why I decided to go to your place instead,” I explain.

And Yamapi stops dragging me. He sighs as he walks back to his room. “Well, I think you can hang out here for a little bit more.”

----------

It’s 5pm, and I just walk out of the train station. I spent almost the whole day at Yamapi’s. I played around with his guitar, helped him wash the family car, and even joined him to help his mom with her laundry. Seriously, I helped him doing houseworks! God! My pride! My pride is in crisis!

As I make my way back to my house, my phone rings. I take my phone from my pocket and flipped it open. It’s Koyama. Gosh. What is it now? I’m dead tired and I think I really need to have a long nice bath.

“Yeah, Koyama. What?”

“Ne, Ryo-chan! My mom made a new flavour ramen. She wants your mom to try it out before she puts it on the menu. Can you come over and get it from me? I’m pretty much busy with the customers right now. I won’t have the time to send it to your place,” he replies.

“Eh?”

“Oh come on! I can’t even talk to you for too long right now, Ryo-chan! Just come over will you?”

“B-but.. w-well.. I m-mean.. I-is.. w-well, is Shi-Shige still th-there?”

“Oh, God! Is that even matter? Just come and get the ramen. And no, Shige already left,” says Koyama, annoyed.

I feel so relief as I close my phone. I turn my body and start to walk to Koyama’s place. Geez. I’ve told Yamapi about what happened. Should I tell Koyama? I mean Koyama maybe always act so childish although he’s actually a year older than us, but he’s indeed the right person to talk to when you have problem.

It takes me about less than 5 minutes to get there. Surprisingly, I don’t understand why Koyama is being so busy when there are only a few customers inside. I look around the shop trying to find Koyama. I then walk further inside to the kitchen, and bingo! Koyama is just beside the stove, placing the ramen inside the bento box. Just before I enter the kitchen, someone accidentally bumps into my back.

“Huaaaaaaa! I’m so sorry. I tripped! I’m just going to say bye to my friend who is inside the kitch…. Nishikido-kun!?”

“Sh-Shige!?”

“Oh! Ryo-chan! You are here!” says Koyama when he notices my presence.

“Yeah, I’m here. And I thought you said Shige left,” I say as I take the ramen that Koyama hands to me.

“Well, he is about to leave. That makes no different for me. So, Shige! You are leaving right? Such a coincidence, ne? You can go back with Ryo-chan, then. I don’t have to be worried that something might happen to you on your way back,” says Koyama with a smile.

Shige smiles awkwardly. And so did I. Gosh. Don’t tell me he asked me to come here to take the ramen just because he doesn’t want Shige to go home by himself. Huh. “Well, I’ll be waiting outside then,” says Shige as he quickly makes his way out.

I turn my head to Koyama. He just grins, making his single eye lid eyes disappear as two straight lines replace them. “Are you really busy or there’s another reason why you asked me to come over to take the ramen?” I say, curiously.

“Well, let just say that Yamapi called. Now, go! Don’t make Shige waits,” Koyama pushes me all the way to the entrance door of his ramen shop.

“God, Koyama! I’m straight! Don’t encourage this!” I groan as I try to stop him pushing me.

“Yeah, I know. That’s the same exact thing Shoon told me and Yamapi. And well, maybe just like him, you just haven’t realized it yet,” he keeps pushing me to where Shige is currently waiting for me.

“No, wait! It’s still not certain whether I actually like him, okay! It’s still possible that I was just being carried away,” I complain as I manage to drag him back to inside the shop.

Koyama smirks. He pulls me closer and places his hand just beside my ear as he whispers. “Hold his hand, and see where your heart makes you do next,” he whispers. Huaaaa!! I shiver! I shiver when he says that. Hold his hand? Koyama! You gotta be kidding me!

“That will just give him a wrong signal!”

“Seriously, trust me,”

Crap! Damn, Yamapi! I will kill him when I see him tomorrow at school! If only he didn’t call Koyama, I won’t be in this stupid situation right now. Shige and I just walk side by side without saying a word. I glance at him a couple of time. It seems like he is trying his best not to look nervous. Well, at least he manages to do so until he trips over a rock on the road and falls.

“Gosh, Shige! Can you please stop being such a moron?” I say as I help him to get up.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t see that rock. I’m so sorry,” he says as he tries to clean his dirty pants.

“Why the hell did you say sorry twice for? Stop being so clumsy,”

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to. I w-was j-just.. w-well.. I mean.. oh.. sorry,”

“Again. You said it twice again,” I say again.

Shige goes silent. Honestly, he totally looks like the skinny and clumsy Kato that I met when he just entered our school. I sigh. I really couldn’t believe myself that I’m actually doing this. I pull out my hand, take his, and hold it gently (or nervously to be exact). Shit! I’m holding his hand right now. I’m freaking holding his hand right now!! I need to see a psychiatrist!

As expected, Shige is so shock that he just let me drag him, making him walking. I can clearly sense that he must be looking at me in such a wonder right now. Yeah, I’m even wondering about what I’m currently doing myself, let alone him. So I just do as Koyama told me, waiting to see what my heart will make me do next.

“Anou, Nishikido-kun. I think I should say sorry. You really don’t have to hold my hand. This must be as awkward as it is for you just like it is to me. I shouldn’t have kissed you yesterday,” Shige speaks up at last.

I stop walking and turn my head to him as I let go of his hand. “Well, I don’t blame you. I have to admit that I’m too sexy to resist,” I try to make a joke out of it, and do my best to laugh. But obviously, the laugh sounds so fake. As I sigh, I grab his hand again.

“Let’s just go home. We’ll talk about this later,” I add. Shige just nods.

We walk and walk, but it seems like it takes us forever to reach my house. I’m still holding his hand, with my other hand holding the ramen. About a moment later, I start to feel Shige’s hand wraps tighter against mine. He’s holding my hand back. Sudden warmth runs through his hand to mine, making me shiver a little in shock. Without me realizing it, my hand holds his ever tighter.

I think Koyama is right. Holding his hand seriously gives an explanation on how I feel about the whole thing. I maybe do not do anything more than holding his hand, but it feels so heavy to let go when I reach my house. It feels so heavy that I keep holding his hand although Shige is already trying to pull his hand from my grip. It feels even heavier to let go when I say goodbye to him. It is as if I just want to keep holding his hand.

I think I’m in love.
