Chapter 6: If Only

Shige stared at the coffee that was right in front of him. That day was particularly cold and the snow was heavy. The bright morning seemed to hate that small town lately that it refused to show up. Shige himself had been skipping work for two days now. He somehow couldn’t get over what he just did the other night.

“You are back to the Shige that I need to reheat the coffee each time, you know,” said Masuda as he grabbed the coffee cup from the table where Shige was.

“But it’s not during lunch time, Massu. So it’s a different situation,” replied Shige with an awkward smile.

“You see, the fact that you’ve been coming here during working hours actually freaks me out. You didn’t get fired or something, did you?” asked Masuda.

“Of course not,”

“Then what are you doing here?”

“Skipping work..”

“Why?”

“Because I slept with my boss..”

“YOU WHAT?!?!?!” exclaimed Masuda, almost dropped the coffee cup on his hand.

Masuda quickly put down the cup and sat in front of Shige. He looked at Shige deep in the eyes while gulping. At that moment, Shige was pretty sure that Masuda would say that he just did the stupidest thing ever, and that he did something that he said he wouldn’t do.

“Are you the uke or the seme?” asked Masuda, somehow looked excited.

“Am I what?!”

“I said, are you the uke or the seme?” repeated Masuda as he sat down in front of Shige.

“Haaa??”

“Oh, Shige! Come on! Tell me which one you are!!” grinned Masuda.

“The seme, of course..” replied Shige reluctantly.

“Oh, damn! I was betting that you are the uke!! Now I owe Tegoshi some money!” groaned Masuda with head on the table.

“Errr.. This is not what I had in mind your reaction would be,” frowned Shige.

“Hahahaha.. But Shige, it’s kind of obvious that he likes you,” said Masuda with his bright wide smile.

“What do you mean by that?”

“How could someone as arrogant as he gives you help on writing articles, treats you lunch sometimes, and doesn’t mind you helping him without feeling pathetic at all? Am I right?”

“…………”

“For once, I’m so smart!” exclaimed Masuda happily.

“You should go back to work,” complained Shige.

--------------------

“Men are all the same! Fuck him! I hate men! I shall like women from now on!” Ryo gulped his beer until the very end.

His face was so red as he was almost drunk. His tie wasn’t tidy and his shirt was in such a mess. Ryo looked so much worse that when he wasn’t able to finish his job. He had been really grumpy for the past few days, and many of his sub-ordinates were pretty sure they could have a nervous break down soon enough if Ryo stayed in such mood.

“Anou~, Nishikido-san. I-I t-think you d-drink too much,”

“Oh shut up, Koyama! What you know about all this?!? Your bestfriend is not coming to work at all and he didn’t pick up all of my freaking calls. What am I?!?! A whore? Not everyone has a happy life with his partner like you and Yamapi,” Ryo then put up his hand to the bar’s owner, asking for another glass of beer.

Stoned, Koyama quickly put his head down and just stared at his own half-finished beer. He could only tilt his head in wonder as he looked at Yamashita that was just laughing looking at Ryo’s behaviour. Why everyone seems to be noticing that I’m dating Yamapi? Life is unfair! complained poor Koyama to himself.

“Seriously Ryo-chan, how did you manage to sleep with him? Kei-ch… ehm.. I mean, Koyama told me that Kato is perfectly straight,” giggled Yamashita, a little bit amused.

“I kissed him. That’s all I did,” groaned Ryo.

“Only that?”

“Okay, maybe with a little bit of tongue, but I did nothing more than that,”

“Then?”

“Em.. I don’t know, Pi! Stop asking! Arrghh! I fucking can’t remember how exactly it happened, okay?! All I can remember was that I was being lead to my bedroom, and that’s it, BAMM! He fucked me.. I’m not even an uke to begin with!”

Yamashita couldn’t help it but laughing out loud. It was so amusing that his bestfriend looked in such a mess, being frustrated with the fact that he just couldn’t find Shige at all. Koyama felt like laughing, but he was still a little bit too shock that Shige, among all people, managed to topped the great Nishikido Ryo in bed.

“Okay. Then let me ask you something. Are you mad that he fucked you, or because he has been skipping work lately?” asked Yamashita, with a more serious tone this time.

“None of those,” replied Ryo.

“Then?”

“I’m angry because he makes me fall for him, hard..” Ryo rested his head on the table with eyes starring at random spot.

Ryo could still remember the very first time he met Shige. He didn’t really like him, at all. Shige was just some plain skinny looking guy showing him some direction that happened to be his sub-ordinates. He could still remember how shocked he was, finding Shige’s pattern of writing that used so many analogies and pretty much looked almost like how Ryo wrote all of his articles.

He couldn’t remember when, but he started to become a little bit soft around Shige. He didn’t curse that much when he was mad; and he got grumpy less often than he usually did. There was actually a slight happiness in Ryo when Shige wasn’t really bothered with the fact that he was gay. But of course, getting no news from Shige after they slept together was driving Ryo insane.

“Stop being such a girl, Ryo-chan. You should be happy because it is finally being confirmed that you’ll be back to the main branch by the end of the week. You’ll be their Columnist Views main writer again. Despite the fact that you won’t be an editor anymore, the payment is surely something awesome,” said Yamashita, trying to cheer his besfriend up.

“Oh, Pi. That’s the thing. I’ll be leaving soon, and that stupid idiot sub-ordinate of mine hasn’t contacted me just yet. At least I just want to tell him that the confirmation came early instead of next month,” groaned Ryo.

“Maybe you should just go to his apartment, Nishikido-san,” suggested Koyama.

Ryo went silent for awhile. He sat up properly and played around with his beer, thinking of what Koyama just told him. He had thought of that option a couple of times, but he just didn’t have the guts to do it. For the first time ever, he had to admit that all the pride he had just simply disappeared.

“I can’t handle goodbye when nothing is even starting between us, Koyama..”

--------------------

“Go to work, Shige,” said Tegoshi.

Shige blinked his eyes several time, not really sure why Tegoshi suddenly talked to him. It was Wednesday morning, and Tegoshi was working at the café. They never talked to each other before, of course other than when Shige was ordering something. There were probably a couple of “hi” here and there when Shige met him, but nothing more than that.

“Eh?”

“Massu told me,” replied Tegoshi.

“Told you what?”

“Told me that you have been skipping work since you slept with your boss,” replied Tegoshi again as he leaned forward from behind the bar, where Shige was sitting on.

“Oh.. that..”

“What's with the oh.. that..? You really need to go back to work, Shige. Poor Nishikido Ryo might be feeling really crushed right now,” said Tegoshi.

“What do you mean by that? Nishikido-san won’t feel that down just because I don’t go to work,”

“Oh of course he won’t. But the thing is, you slept with him. And not getting any news from you would be the last thing he wants to happen. Trust me. It feels like shit,” said Tegoshi again, in a more serious tone.

Shige sighed. He didn’t really understand why Tegoshi suddenly acting that way. Little he knew that the same situation happened with Masuda and Tegoshi previously. All the “hide from Tegoshi” moment that Masuda had some times ago was actually driven by the same exact reason that Shige had right now.

Unconsciously, he felt guilty for not coming to work. Not even once Shige actually skipped from work, no matter how much he used to hate his job. As he exhale a long breath, Shige started to walk to his office. He really should not mix his own personal problem with his work, he thought. That wasn’t professional.

It didn’t take him long to reach his division front door. Slowly and reluctantly, Shige turned the knob. He murmured out some good luck phrase so that he wouldn’t feel really awkward to see Ryo’s face again. Ryo probably would just ignore him anyway. Well, maybe scold him.

“Shige!!!!!! You came!” Koyama jumped around happily as Shige entered the office.

“Eh?” Shige was stoned with the fact that Koyama was suddenly inside his division office.

He walked in, finding something a little different with the office. Somehow the office gave out a happier mood and everyone’s face seemed to be brighter than usual. Even weirder, Koyama was standing beside Shige’s colleague’s desk, helping him with something.

“Koyama, what are you doing here?”

“I got transferred!” smiled Koyama.

“To this section?” asked Shige again.

Koyama nodded. This time his face looked a little worried. Shige tilted his head in wonder. It was weird that Yamashita let Koyama worked in other section. He kept going on and on that he would only let Koyama go if he became an editor. Eh?! Wait a minute..

Upon realization, Shige quickly put his bag on his desk and walked towards Ryo’s desk. It was as if he was struck by lightening when he noticed that it wasn’t Ryo’s stuff anymore on that desk. Getting angry out of no where, Shige hit the table hard with his fist. He was biting his lower lip, with eyes looked so angry.

“Are you replacing him, Koyama?? Are you replacing him?!” said Shige, half shouting.

“Y-yes.. Since Monday,”

“Where is he? Where is Ryo now?!” asked Shige in a low angry tone.

“He got transferred back to the main branch,” said Koyama reluctantly.

With head down, Shige suddenly felt so angry. He felt so angry at himself. If only he didn’t skip work. If only he wasn’t being too carried away being frustrated with the fact that he just slept with a guy. If only…

“Shit.. I’m so stupid,”

Don't worry, Massu, we were all betting that. XDDDD

Not to be a jerk, but "staring at a random spot" is what it should say. XD Can't help doing grammar checks - I'm an English major, and I'm anal. >_< Don't take it personally.
