Chapter 7: And So He Fell
His table was in such a mess. Many copies of newspaper was scattered everywhere. Tons of notes were stick on almost every inch of his cubicle’s wall. He hadn’t even gone back to his house for the past two days. Ryo was totally worn out with his work. It was really nothing compare to his work as an editor before.
“Nishikido,” said someone, as he leaned on the side of Ryo’s cubicle.
Ryo looked up. A middle age man with thick glasses shoved him a document. That old geezer, or that was how Ryo kept refer to him as, was his editor since even before he worked on the other branch. On early of his career, Ryo had to put up with all the unnecessary scold or criticism that his editor often threw at him.
“Good job with this. I think you have improved a lot,” smiled his editor.
The latter froze, his mouth was even half opened. Never ever in Ryo’s life, that old geezer praised him, let alone smiled at him. He stared at the document in front of him. He flipped it open. It was his first draft for that week newspaper. He blinked a couple of second as he noticed that there wasn’t any red mark on it, not even one.
“Haaaaaaaa??????? You didn’t correct anything?!?!?! You gotta be kidding me?! Not even one grammar mistake??” asked Ryo in disbelieve.
“Surprisingly no. And also, I found your vocabulary range has increased. Somehow, the way you write your argument has softened a little bit, in a good way of course. You put more reasoning to justify you argument. Well done, really,” explain his editor again.
Actually, work had been such a pain in the ass for Ryo. The work load was nothing compare to when he was still working as an editor. It had been ages since he was back to the main branch; and it took him a while to get used to the heavy load again.
The only thing that kept bothering Ryo so much was just the fact that he hadn’t found the courage to contact Shige. It wasn’t that the really lost contact or such. Shige actually tried to call him, emailed him, and even texted him almost every single day. However, Ryo just hadn’t gotten the courage to answer the phone call or reply to Shige’s messages.
Ryo leaned his back to his chair as he stared for a moment to the calendar on his desk. Two months, one week, and five days, thought Ryo. Yeah. That was exactly how long he had left that small town. He buried himself with tons of research and reviewing the article he wrote over and over again, just to forget about that one night. That one freaking night that seriously drove him crazy.
For a moment there, Ryo was just stoned like a statue, not moving even an inch from his chair. It even took him more that five seconds to realize that his phone was ringing. He lazily trailed his hand to his phone and flipped it open without even bother to check who the caller was.
“Ryo-channnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you free after work? Can we go for dinner? I’m in Osaka for the rest of the weekend!!! I know you won’t say no to me!!” screamed Yamashita over the phone.
“Pi, I think you just made me deft,” complained Ryo.
“Oh come on! I know you’ll say yes. Right right right right?” said Yamashita in such a begging tone.
“I’m tired, Pi. I think I’ll just straight away go back home after I’m done with work,”
“Huaaa!!! Ryo-chan is such a meanie. He doesn’t miss me at all! Huaaa!! After all the hardship we’ve been through together during highschool, Ryo-chan is going to dump me for work,” whined Yamashita even more.
“Oh, shut up,” groaned Ryo in annoyance.
“Okay then!! It’s decided! Meet you in the usual bar!” cheered Yamashita without waiting for Ryo’s answer at all.
“Ha?? Ehh?? Yamapi~… Damn it! You did not just cut the call! Arrghhh!”
------------------------------
Ryo was pretty sure that God pretty much hated him at that moment. First of all, he unwillingly came to the café, although all he had in mind was actually his nice awesome bed. Secondly, Ryo couldn’t recall Yamashita saying anything about bringing Koyama along. Lastly, Ryo couldn’t believe his eyes that Shige came along too!
“What are you doing here?” asked Ryo coldly to Shige.
“Seminar. I think you supposed to know that the main branch had a seminar for all editors of other branches,” replied Shige.
“And why you have to come?! You are not an editor,” pierced Ryo. Deep inside, Ryo seriously hated to see Shige again. Somehow, he just wanted to forget about him.
Shige went quite. He sighed as he leaned his back to his chair. He somehow looked pretty much pissed. Koyama, on the other hand, didn’t feel really comfortable with the aura that the two of them were giving out.
“You seriously never checked any of my emails, didn’t you?” groaned Shige.
“Why should I? You weren’t even bother to contact me before I leave,”
“Do you have any idea that I’m indeed an editor now?”
“Don’t bluff.”
“I’m not bluffing,”
“You always do,”
“What do you mean by I always do?!”
“Oh you asked what I mean?! Acting all straight when you are actually not is considered as bluffing, in case you do not know that,”
“I’m not acting straight. I am straight!”
“Yeah, whatever. Straight guy doesn’t sleep with another guy,” said Ryo at the end.
Then silent. Shige didn’t know how to reply Ryo. All he could do was looking deep in Ryo’s eyes intensely with full of anger. The latter didn’t seem to be bothered by what Shige was doing. On the other hand, the others started to feel a little uncomfortable with the situation. Koyama kicked Yamashita’s leg under the table, trying to tell his boyfriend to do something about the situation.
“Maa~, let’s stop the argument okay? Let’s just say that both of you were right. Shige, if you are straight you wouldn’t be sleeping with Ryo. But again Ryo-chan, Shige is indeed an editor. He’s the editor of Tokyo branch’s Environmental Issues section. He got transferred around two weeks ago,” explain Yamashita.
“Tokyo?”
“Yeah! You worked there before as well, right? Nice place, nice environment, and of course nice people. Koyama recommended him to the CEOs,” added Yamashita.
“You recommended him?! What do you know about his quality of work?” groaned Ryo suddenly as he turned his head to Koyama.
“Eh?!” Koyama stoned.
“What the freaking hell you just did? He’s not ready! He’s still immature! Yes, he has talent. I fucking know that, but he’s not ready! Are you out of your mind?!” said Ryo in higher pitch.
“Who the hell are you deciding whether I’m ready or not!” complained Shige.
“Because I was your freaking editor, and I know your capability! Environmental Issues ain’t for you! You have so much more to offer the freaking company than just your sweet writing!”
“What the fuck Nishikido?! You worked as my editor for less than a year! You have no right to judge my ability,” Shige stood up as he banged the table.
There was anger in Ryo’s eyes as Shige said what he just said. Ryo took a sip from his drink and started to packing up his stuff. Yamashita tried to stop him, but Ryo refused to listen to him. That wasn’t what Ryo had in mind when he drove unwillingly to the café. All he wanted was a nice dinner with his best friend.
“Yes, I’m aware of that, Shige.. I mean Kato. Less than a year. But every single time, your draft was the first one I read. Your freaking draft was the only one that I read word by word. And you were the one that helped me out checking the others’ draft, and I must admit that you did a good job. Don’t you dare saying that I have no right to judge your ability. I’ve been working in this company even before you graduate from high-school,” said Ryo for the last time, as he walked away.
Shige just stoned, didn’t know what to say.
------------------------------
The first thing he did when he reached his apartment was grabbing a can of beer from his refrigerator. Ryo could only groaned in annoyance as he sat on his big sofa, in front of the TV. He switched it on, but didn’t really watch it. He didn’t really watch TV anyway.
All his life, it was the first time that he felt so emotional. Not emotional as in getting angry or something. It was as if all he wanted to do was crying. However, his ego just didn’t let him to. His man ego refused to admit that for once, the great Nishikido Ryo wasn’t so great at handling his own feeling.
His phone rang. Ryo just stared at it, refused to move an inch from where he was. It rang for quite some times, until the ringtone stop playing as the caller hang up. However, a moment later, it rang again. Ryo really wasn’t in such a mood to answer any phone call right now, but in the same time, he wasn’t in such a mood to listen to his stupid ringtone either.
“Yes?” answered Ryo at the end.
“Ryo?” said the other line.
“……..” Ryo went silent. He knew that voice really well.
“Ryo, are you there?” asked the other line again.
“Oh yeah. Yeah Shige, I’m here. What do you want?”
“Ehm. I’m outside,”
“What do you mean by you are outside?” asked Ryo.
“I followed you back. I just wanted to say sorry, but my hand just refused to ring your door bell…”
“WHAT?!”
With phone still against his ear, Ryo stood up and quickly walked towards his front door. As he opened his door, he could see clearly Shige at the end of the hall way. The younger man was leaning on a big pillar while looking at a random spot on the floor. His face somehow looked frustrated and confused.
“What the fuck are you doing there?! You looked like a total moron! And how the hell could you even past the security guard and went up here?!” shouted Ryo as he walked towards Shige.
Shige turned his head, looked a little shock that Ryo decided to walk out of his apartment just because he said he was outside.
“I-I don’t kn-know. They just let me in,” replied Shige.
“Why are you even here in the first place?!” asked Ryo again.
Surprisingly Shige drew himself closer and wrapped his arms around the shorter man. Ryo’s eyes were then widened open in shock. “I just want to say I’m sorry. I thought because you are a guy, you could take it. I had no idea that it wasn’t that much different with girls, that guys would also feel frustrated about this kind of thing,” said Shige.
“……..”
“You don’t have to say anything. I know. I’m the one to blame. It was all my doing, and yet I was the one that didn’t contact you. You have all the right to be mad,” added Shige.
Slowly, Ryo tried to push Shige away. He couldn’t take it. It hurt. He didn’t know why but it hurt. He kept trying to push Shige away, but Shige’s grip was just somehow to strong. Or maybe it was just him that went weak.
“Please, Ryo. Just for a moment, let me stay this way just for a moment. I won’t disturb you any longer after this. I won’t show my face in front of you anymore, and I won’t even try to contact you. I kind of fell for you, hard…”
Shige wasn’t sure why, but Ryo stopped moving. The next thing he knew, Ryo was there, hugging him back, crying.
